Muscle pain is one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor in Europe and is often found in the back and neck area. On average, less than a tenth of all adult Europe country do not suffer from sore muscles at least once a year. However, appropriate measures and remedies can prevent and treat muscle pain.

What is muscle pain?
Muscle pain is referred to in medical jargon as myalgia, which can be
caused by a variety of triggers. Too much or wrong exercise, bruises, bad posture but also diseases can be responsible for the aching muscles. As varied as the reasons, muscle pain is also widespread.
In addition, they can express themselves in different ways: cramps, pressure, tearing and radiating symptoms are possible with muscle pain. The suffering is often difficult to bear and is perceived as at least disturbing for the length of its duration.
Muscle pain is considered acute when it occurs suddenly and lasts only for a short time. In the case of overexertion, i.e. sore muscles, this can be a few days. This also includes aching limbs during a cold or flu. But pain after a bruise or fracture is also an acute muscle pain, even if it can last for several weeks in this case.
Chronic muscle pain
Chronic myalgia is muscle pain that lasts longer than six months or lasts several days a week during this period. However, if the cause of pain is unclear, a doctor should be consulted long before this time limit is reached. A medical examination and treatment should of course also take place if the cause is already known or at least suspected.
types of muscle pain
Muscle pain is basically divided into four types:
- Muscle cramps – Many people experience these primarily in the evenings and at night, and they occur repeatedly. The calf muscles are often affected. The cramps are very painful but only last for a short time and are due to metabolic disorders in the muscles.
Muscle injuries – bruises, strains, but also unfamiliar muscle work during sports lead to injuries that hurt as a result. When the muscles are sore, the pain only lasts for a short time. In the case of larger injuries, the healing time is significantly longer and the scar tissue is also initially susceptible to further injuries.- Tensions – Poor posture or incorrect strain can lead to hardening and tension in the muscles, which can hurt and restrict movement. This type of muscle pain often occurs in the neck and back area.
- Generalized muscle pain – If the muscle pain occurs in several areas or even in the whole body, it is referred to as generalized muscle pain. These can occur, for example, with infections such as colds or flu and allergies associated with inflammatory processes.
In addition, myalgic pain, as muscle pain is also called, is differentiated according to the type of pain. As mentioned, these can be felt as pulling, pressing, tearing or cramping.
muscle pain causes
Muscle pain can have many different causes. Even the same type of pain can be caused by different triggers.
muscle injuries
- Muscle cramp
- muscle strains
- muscle tear
- muscle bruises
Sore muscles are the result of an unusual strain on the muscles. Intensive training, hard physical work or new movement sequences can be responsible for this.
Muscle strains occur when muscle fibers are severely stretched. A muscle tear is – as the name suggests – a severe overstretching that causes the muscle fibers to tear.
Muscle bruises occur when the muscle is crushed against the bone. This can be caused by a hit, bump, kick or fall. A bruise is usually visible with a bruise.
muscle tension
Anyone who works at a desk knows the problem only too well – at the end of a long day, the neck, shoulders and back are painfully tense and hard. Other causes of muscle tension are:
- monotonous movements
- Lack of exercise and untrained muscles
- one-sided burdens
- Poor posture and stress
- stress and nervousness
muscle diseases
Muscle diseases – so-called myopathies – are often accompanied by both muscle
weakness and pain. Autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia as a special form of soft tissue rheumatism, metabolic disorders, viruses, bacteria and parasites can also be responsible. However, muscle pain can also be a symptom of other diseases. Osteoarthritis, diseases of the nervous system and arteries are possible causes.
Medication as a trigger for muscle pain
Some medications can cause muscle pain as an unwanted side effect. These include, for example, interferon, diuretics and statins. Toxins and drugs, including heroin, can also cause sore muscles.
If myalgic pain occurs as a result of taking medication, a targeted supply of minerals can help. However, you should not take them carelessly, but only after consulting a doctor.
muscle pain symptoms
Symptoms of acute muscle pain can come on suddenly, be localized, or spread throughout the body. Cramps and tension are typical, but pressure and tearing as well as soreness also occur. These symptoms are the same as with chronic pain, but they last longer and can also have a limiting effect. Accompanying symptoms in people with chronic muscle pain are common:
- movement restrictions
- (morning) stiffness
- feelings of swelling
This in turn results in
- Sleep disorders,
- fatigue and
- Depression.
muscle pain in pregnancy
Muscles pain during pregnancy, especially in the back, is not uncommon. The increasing weight of the stomach tempts many women to slouch and a change in movements is necessary. This puts an unusual strain on the muscles. Lying down and sleeping becomes more difficult due to the growing belly, which can cause tension. There are also Braxton Hicks contractions, i.e. exercise contractions in which the muscles contract and become hard. If muscle pain lasts longer during pregnancy or is very intense, you should of course see a doctor.
muscle pain in children
Pain in children is not uncommon, on the contrary. 10 to 20 percent of all school children and adolescents regularly suffer from joint and muscle pain. Growing pains are often behind them – but by no means always. Heavy textbooks, incorrect loads and undesirable developments can also be behind it. Therefore, pain in children that lasts longer than two to three days or occurs repeatedly should be taken seriously and its cause investigated.
Muscle pain after exercise
Unusual exertion and movement patterns can lead to microscopic injuries and changes in muscle pH. The result is the well-known sore muscles, which usually only become noticeable the day after the exertion. Cold compresses help immediately after exercise, while heat in the form of baths, showers or heat plasters can be used a day or two later. In addition, the muscle should be rested for one to two days and only moved slightly so that healing is possible.
muscle pain diagnosis
If the cause of the muscle pain is unclear, a comprehensive diagnosis is required. The following examinations are usually used for clarification:
- Imaging procedures such as CT, MRT, X-rays and ultrasound are intended to make underlying changes, undesirable developments and foci of inflammation visible
- Electromyography is used to measure electrical muscle activity
- Muscle biopsies are performed under local anesthesia to diagnose muscle disorders
- Blood tests may be necessary to measure inflammation levels, to detect metabolic disorders or deficiency symptoms
Which form of examination is chosen depends on the one hand on the duration and type of muscle pain and on the other hand on the results of previous diagnostic procedures.
muscle pain treatment
The treatment of muscle pain is, of course, dependent on its cause. However, there are some means and measures that are used very frequently.
